Detailing Electric Bill Savings

by moneysma on January 25, 2012

My Personal Update post from yesterday mentioned that I was moving in with my girlfriend. As a result of that, there comes the splitting of bills. Without going into great detail, we decided on a system that on paper, looks like it will work. Of course, that could change after a few months. One of the bills that I am responsible for is the electric bill.

The bill came in the mail the other day and it turns out that for the month the bill is for $72.87. I have decided to embark on the mission to try to reduce the bill. My goal is to get it under $50 per month. Ideally, I’d love to get it closer to $40. I will update you on the progress of my goal and what exactly I have done to try to meet the goal.

We live in PA, which has deregulated electricity. She has already picked an electric generation company, saving roughly $0.02 per kilowatt now. (I say now because her price is fixed for the year, while the comparison price varies each month.) Again, this was already done, so I will recognize no savings through this.

What I Plan To Do:

  • Analyze the light bulb situation and replace some bulbs to CFL’s or LED’s.
  • Be conscious of turning the lights off when leaving a room
  • Check out “zombie” appliances. These are the electronics that consume electricity even when turned off.

That is all I plan to do to start. That is all I did at my house and I was able to cut the bill to around $40 per month. So hopefully  can replicate the savings here too.

What have you done to cut your electric bill and how much did it save you?
